Plan Prepare Provide offers a unique opportunity for teachers and their schools to improve their delivery of both academic and practical art lessons.
The programme encompasses an annual three-day residential, stand-alone CPD sessions for the network of alumni and applicants, and a targeted follow-on Postgraduate Certificate in ‘Developing Teacher’s Research and Practice’.
Participating in Plan Prepare Provide enables teachers to:
- engage with pro-active ways to develop their teaching and artistic practice
- build networks, and share ideas and experiences with peers
- improve delivery and results on the written element of the Art A Level
- develop new ideas for planning
- integrate ideas from the art of past and contemporary artists into art lessons with confidence

Plan Prepare Provide was launched in 2017 by the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds, in partnership with the Association for Art History, to provide critical advice, insight and experience from current art and art history teachers, academics and arts professionals.
Since then, this unique programme has supported 120 teachers from over 100 different schools and colleges from across the UK. The combined average weekly student reach of teachers who have engaged in Plan Prepare Provide is 20,504 students. Feedback about the programme has consistently been excellent, with one subject leader commenting that it had enabled teachers ‘to see ways of teaching… that could genuinely empower and enable their students’.
In 2020, the Paul Mellon Centre announced that we would sponsor Plan, Prepare, Provide for three years. This has meant that, despite the brief postponement of the on-campus activity in 2020, the programme organisers have developed exciting new ways to support teachers through art history, including additional bespoke online professional development events for art teachers throughout the academic year, in addition to the annual residential programme.
2021 also sees the launch of the Jane Featherstone Fellowship Scheme, a bursary programme for teachers who have participated in Plan Prepare Provide to undertake a Postgraduate Certificate at the University. Thanks to the generosity of the scheme, six teachers per year will be able to undertake research and reflection on their practice, working with Professor Abigail Harrison-Moore and Anne-Louise Quinton, the programme tutor.
